It’s been a wild week for TV.
The Good Fight returns for its third season – a show that is oddly subversive with the rationality it brings to political and societal conversations.
And then there’s sex and mayhem in new Starz show Now Apocalypse and the Netflix animated show Love, Death& Robots. Don’t dismiss either of these shows out of hand. Now Apocalypse is a TV series from indie director Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin, Doom Generation) and produced by Steven Soderbergh. It is a sexually frank and fluid comedy about young twentysomethings in LA – which may also be an entry point into a story about the end of the world. Some viewers will hate this and find it unwatchably silly – but others will connect to it in a big way. It is challenging TV.
Meanwhile Love, Death & Robots is from David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac, Gone Girl) and Tim Miller (Deadpool). It is a mix of weird and wild animated short films with a broad variety of animation styles. At first blush, it seems a bit low-brow for Fincher. But it speaks volumes to his passion for music videos, which is where he got his start in the 80s. It also represents the most explicit and NSFW content that Netflix has produced to date. Until recently, Netflix shows were actually fairly conservative in terms of depictions of sex, nudity, and violence. But recently it has been pushing boundaries with shows like Big Mouth and Sex Education.
