Oooof. If you’re a grown-up adult looking for a big new or returning show, boy are you going to struggle this weekend.
The big release of the week seems to be a Batman cartoon aimed at 12 year-olds and above. Batman: Caped Crusader is Bruce Timm, who designed the look and feel of the iconic 90s Batman: The Animated Series, back doing a new Batman cartoon. This time it is more clearly rooted in the 1940s and is pretty traditional Batman fare.
The only fresh element to Batman: Caped Crusader is that the villains and some supporting cast members have all been refreshed with gender, race, and other cultural shifts. And that’s all fine. What holds back the show is that it is Bruce Timm and the animation all feels very same-y from the work he did on Batman: TAS and countless other DC animated films since then.
It’s nice seeing Futurama back, I’ve enjoyed the revival of the show during its Hulu era so far. It has been a reliable and welcome show in my life.
Beyond that… that terrible Netflix comedy Unstable starring Rob Lowe and his son is back for a second season. It’s probably funnier if you are friends/family of either. And there’s a new Spongebob Squarepants movie.
On the more grown-up side, this week Evil debuted the first of four episodes that will wind up the series. And boy, you can tell this show isn’t f**king around with the final batch of episodes. The episode deftly moves occasional husband Andy (Patrick Brammall) off the board, opening the door to the Kristen/David coupling the show has flirted with since episode one. And then there’s the sense that the show is right now willing to push boundaries with more f-bombs than we’ve seen from the show, along with some topless female nudity.
