Against all of our better judgement, we’ll be pressing play on Netflix’s new film The Electric State. It has a reported budget of US$320 million, has big stars in the form of Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, and it just looks pretty cool and interesting.
But, there’s a common consensus from critics forming around it:
Of course, there’s the occasional film where there’s a major chasm between the critics opinion and general viewers. But gosh, is it hard not to look at this and get a sense that your time would be better spent elsewhere.
That 2 hours and 8 minutes should be better devoted to the new Netflix drama Adolescence. It’s a 4-part UK drama about a young teen arrested for murdering another kid from school. The show, from writers Jack Thorne (when does this guy sleep - we just saw Toxic Town a few weeks ago) and series actor Stephen Graham, seems like a pretty standard ‘ripped from the headlines’ type of drama. But, the show has a really unique gimmick: Every episode is filmed as one continuous take.
I haven’t seen it yet. I have trouble watching shows and movies about dead kids. But if this week we are going to be guided by Rotten Tomatoes scores, this is going to be hard to ignore:
But you know what we should be watching? Dark Winds. It’s about two Navajo police officers in the 1970s Southwest and is a damn cool, off-radar TV show more of us should be watching.
And that Rotten Tomatoes score…
But, I know you’re all just going to watch The Electric State instead.
I mean, who can go past this robot?
