Your TV cheat sheet: Heists, ninja turtles, and happy endings
Here's your cheat sheet to the TV viewing of the week
Wow. Weird week for TV. The Olympics are in full swing, so there’s certainly a bit less new TV debuting this week, but the titles that are debuting are pretty interesting.
The big release is an Apple TV+ original film - The Instigators, starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, directed by Doug Liman. It’s a solid, entertaining-enough by-the-numbers heist film about two guys who really shouldn’t be in on a heist, employed by some mid-tier mobsters who are really bad at planning.
I was surprised to see this hovering at the 41% Rotten Tomatoes level. It’s more like a 65%. I connected with its vibe.
Also on Apple TV+ is a revival of the late 00s kids show Yo Gabba Gabba. This really isn’t for adults, but if you have young kids in the house, revival Yo Gabba GabbaLand is an absolute must. The first episode has Gillian Jacobs (Community, Love) in it and Apple have published it to YouTube, so I included it in the listings below instead of the trailer.
The idea of a Steph Curry mockumentary series has me pretty apprehensive, but he is teamed up with Adam Pally from Happy Endings, which is always a plus. And the writers are ex-Happy Endings staffers too. Reviews have been pretty positive. But again, pressing play on a Steph Curry mockumentary is a notion that makes it so very, very hard to hit that play button…
Maybe I’ll just rewatch Happy Endings.
Very quietly making a debut this week is new animated show Tales of The Ninja Turtles - this series continues on from last years feature film Mutant Mayhem and will connect to the next animated film, with the same voice cast. I’m not sure why Paramount haven’t made more of an effort getting out the word about the show as it has a receptive audience off the back of a lot of enthusiasm over that last film (that was rather good). All 12 episodes are available to watch. Cowabunga, dudes!
