YouTube viewership continues upward trajectory
This week we saw another release of Nielsen’s monthly look at the US streaming market with the March 2025 The Gauge report.
As we see every months, most of the streamers move up and down slightly within a percentage point every month, but the one trend has continued to be the growth of YouTube. Outside of a brief dip in January by a mere .03%, it has been a continued upward trajectory for YouTube over the past 12 months.
It’s kind-of interesting looking at the same report from 12 months ago. We can see streaming take a larger share of total TV viewing, with expected declines in broadcast and cable viewership.
In terms of a quiet achiever, it’s noteworthy that Paramount+ has grown it’s share from 1% to 2.3% over the course of 12 months. Approximately 0.8% of that is Pluto TV, which is now bundled into the Paramount+ section by Nielsen (it has done the same with Max and Discovery, and Disney/Hulu/ESPN). Still, a .5% lift is quite the achievement for a platform that is largely seen to be spinning its wheels while parent company Paramount Global awaits its new ownership to finally take control of the company. Paramount+ is a core area of focus for David Ellison, so it will be interesting to see if whatever changes are implemented there will yield continued growth.
